GAMEVIEWING

Cornwallis is protected from invasive development by environmentally sensitive core values. After years of neglect the farms new owners and management have undertaken a program of regeneration. This includes the clearing of invasive alien flora and the reintroduction of indigenous fauna to the area.

Game-viewing can be undertaken in one of any number of ways. Since the species introduced are still relatively new to the farm, walking is a good option as is mountain biking although some of the best sitings have been observed from a vehicle. Remember that noise diturbs animals unaccustomed to it so we suggest a slow leisurely drive with a cooler box in the back.

The ranch is stocked with Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Kudu and Blesbuck. Naturally occurring and present are Bushbuck, Duiker, Steenbok, Jackal, Warthog, Honey Badger, Caracal and a host of smaller diurnal and nocturnal mammals. Leopard and baboon traverse regularly over the ranch so precautions and due diligence should be exercised after sunset. The Honey Badger is particularly aggressive and a guest coming across one whilst walking should slowly back off until out of harms way.

4X4 TRAIL

Roughly 80% of the farm can be traversed slowly with a normal sedan by remaining on the main tracks. There are also numerous smaller unmarked tracks which offer those with higher clearance the opportunity to explore the less wondered areas of the farm. Not all routes are marked but guests are encouraged to follow their noses since they all form part of an extensive network and one will loop back to the main tracks leading back to Leadwood Lodge or Harris camp.

The 4x4 mountain trail is exactly that and guests without a 4x4 should not attempt this route. The route is rocky and 4x4's with low clearance should engage low drive and proceed slowly. The views from the top of the trail are spectacular and the thatched lapa and braai area are a great place to sit and relax whilst enjoying the view and the general ambience of the mountain. For those without a 4x4 the Mountain Lapa can be reached after a good hard walk or by mountain bike.
